International Non-Governmental Organization PEACE. (commonly known as ingo PEACE.) has officially signed a partnership agreement with Thamardi Foundation, a Myanmar-based nonprofit organization that has long provided pro bono (free legal) support in cases involving human rights violations such as criminal cases.

With a shared belief that “no true national reconstruction can begin without addressing human rights issues,” the two organizations will promote a Human Rights Pro Bono Project, starting with legal aid for serious criminal cases.

*Pro bono (short for pro bono publico, Latin for “for the public good”) refers to voluntary, unpaid legal work provided primarily by legal professionals. It is a core global human rights initiative based on the principle that even those unable to afford representation should be guaranteed equal rights and access to justice under the law.

Thamardi Foundation is a legal support NGO aiming to create “a society where every life can live in peace,” advocating for “the dignity of all individuals under the protection of the light of law.” It provides legal assistance for criminal and wrongful conviction cases, legal guidance workshops, and free online legal consultations, particularly for citizens unable to afford legal defense due to economic hardship.

The foundation’s longstanding activities have served as a crucial lifeline for the socially vulnerable, including minority groups and others whose voices are often marginalized.

ingo PEACE has taken the step of entering into this agreement in response to the end of international support for the Thamardi Foundation, which has sustained its activities until now. With a determination to carry forward this “baton of hope” and a vision of Asian solidarity, we move forward.

As the first step in this partnership, ingo PEACE. and Thamardi Foundation have begun collaborating on multiple serious human rights violation cases currently drawing public attention in Myanmar, aiming to become a “light of hope” through legal support.

We believe that “justice is always illuminated under the light of the law”, and we will continue to nurture “a light of hope for the future” by delivering equality before the law to all people, regardless of nationality, wealth, or status.

● About Thamardi Foundation (Headquartered in Myanmar)

Thamardi Foundation began its activities in 2009 and was officially registered in 2012 with the government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar as a neutral nonprofit NGO. With the mission of promoting justice and equality under the law, it has provided pro bono legal assistance to those in poverty or socially vulnerable positions.

The foundation offers legal advice, representation, and rights education based on the constitution and current laws to diverse groups including children, women, workers, farmers, and ethnic minorities.

Its activities also include support for survivors of sexual violence, securing land and property rights, and preventing gender-based discrimination. Backed by a network of over 40 lawyers, it provides localized legal support throughout the country.

To meet the needs of women and marginalized groups, the foundation also supports the operation of shelters and safe spaces.

Following the major earthquake in March 2025, the foundation launched legal services to protect housing and land ownership in affected areas, supported the issuance of birth certificates and citizenship confirmation cards, and provided practical gender-responsive training to women’s organizations and shelters.

The name “Thamardi” comes from the Myanmar language and means “integrity,” “virtue,” and “sincerity.” This ethos runs deeply through all of the foundation’s activities.
